This work was undertaken reluctantly in the sense that the writer knew there were many others who might have performed the task more worthily; with alacrity, in the consciousness that there was need to point out the place which Bowne's system ocen pies in the history of philosophy, and that more than five years have passed without this being done. This feeling was inten sified by the expressed desire of Professor Eucken that such a work be undertaken.
