L'origine des clubs, le mot l'indique assez, est anglaise. Le nom de club (massue) fut pris, au temps de la lutte des têtes rondes et des cavaliers, par les premières assemblées populaires qui se formèrent dans le but de eirmer la monarchie. Plus tard, en changeant d'acception, lemot passa dans le vocabulaire de la royauté représentative. L'engouement de la noblesse française pour les modes bri tanniques et l'admiration de nos hommes d'état pour les moeurs politiques de l'angleterre préparèrent l'introduc tion des clubs en France.
Plusieurs clubs se formèrent spontanément à Versailles, en 1789, autour de l'assemblée nationale1 et la suivirent quand elle vint s'établir à Paris. Là, au sein d'une popula tion eft'ervescente, les clubs crurent rapidement en nombre et en force; ils rivalisèient bientôt d'influence avec l'as semblée et finirent, en se propageant surtout le territoire, par s'emparer presque absolument de la direction des affaires. Leur influence expira, comme on sait, le 9 ther widor avec la{domination des jacobins qui leur avaient donné une organisation formidable'.
