During subsequent periods Of my official residences in these Islands prior to the year 1880, while making ethnological researches among the aborigines, I arranged a Vocabulary con taining some words with numerous illustrative phrases. Government granted me a subvention for printing this work in 1883, but as I had at that time volunteered for the appointment at the N icobars - recently rendered vacant by the murder Of Mr. De Roepstorff - I thought it advisable to delay the publi ca tion Of my Vocabulary until I had availed myself of the Opportunity thus Offered to verify my notation Of the various complex sounds in the N icobarese language, and to enlarge the scope Of the work.
