The delay in the appearance of this volume finds an apology partly in circumstances of a private character, partly in public engagements that could not he declined, but most of all in the growth of the work itself as it progressed in my hands. I have not, as some one prophesied, reached ten volumes; but the present concluding volume is somewhat larger and has cost me infinitely more trouble than I expected.
