But this circumstance renders it still more necessary to German scholars: to them the' Anglo Saxon is almost what the Icelandic is to those of Denmark, Sweden, and Norway; not because the German and Dutch can, strictly Speaking, be con sidered as derived from it, but because, of the old-saxon and other ancient, sexstinct, dialects, from which they are~ derived, such small fragments are transmitted 1to us, that they must, in great mea sure, be explained and illustrated by the aid of the anglo-saxon, to which tongue recourse may be had, where the others completely desert the phi lologist; for the Icelandic lies more remote for Germans, though quite as interesting to them, as anglo-saxon to' Scandinavians.
