My former work, the botanical collector's handbook, published in 1881, met with a ﬂattering reception. The present volume, while embracing all the matters contained in the earlier work, is entirely rewritten, much enlarged, and, I hope, improved. Its preparation has engaged my attention for several years. I should have often felt like abandoning the project, had it not been for the encouragement and active aid of my fellow-botanists.
