Excerpt from A Disquisition Upon Etruscan Vases: Displaying Their Probable Connection With the Shows at Eleusis, and the Chinese Feast of Lanterns, With Explanations of a Few of the Principal Allegories Depicted Upon Them
The object of this Tract is to render a more clear and satisfactory account than has been hitherto given, of the nature, use and meaning of those painted Vases, usually termed Etruscan. The oh servations comprised in it chiefly concern the antiquary; but some persons curious in painting, have supposed that if these vessels were properly examined, they would furnish valuable materials for the ancient history of the art, to such, therefore, the writer addresses, by way of Preface, some remarks that result from his investigations.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the enigmatic world of Etruscan vases, seeking to decipher their purpose and the meaning behind their intricate paintings. Challenging traditional interpretations, the author proposes a groundbreaking theory: these vases were not mere decorative objects or prizes but rather served as visual records of the Eleusinian Mysteries, ancient Greek initiation rites shrouded in secrecy. By drawing parallels between Etruscan vase paintings and accounts of the Eleusinian Mysteries, the author unveils a hidden connection. The book explores the symbolism embedded in the vase designs, revealing their links to the core beliefs of the Mysteries, such as the cyclical nature of life and death, and the promise of rebirth and renewal. The author delves into the role of figures like Bacchus, the god of wine and transformation, and the enigmatic Cabiri, ancient deities associated with these rituals. Through meticulous analysis of vase imagery and comparisons with Eastern traditions, this book sheds light on the profound philosophical and spiritual significance of the Eleusinian Mysteries. The author's insights offer a fresh perspective on these ancient rituals and their enduring legacy, demonstrating how Etruscan vases provide a window into a lost world of belief and symbolism.
