Sinossi

Excerpt from The Chartist Movement

It remained to prepare the book for the press. As a first step I was advised by Mr. Wallas to submit the manuscript to Mr. Julius West, the author of a recently completed History of Chanism, whose publication is only delayed by war con ditions. Mr. West has been kind enough to go through the whole manuscript and also to read the proofs. His help has been of great service, not only in correcting errors, resolving doubts, and removing occasional repetitions, but also in advising as to the form which the publication was to take.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the tumultuous Chartist movement of the Victorian era, a pivotal chapter in the history of democratic reform in the United Kingdom. The movement, a product of Britain's rapidly industrializing society, emerged as working-class communities struggled to cope with economic hardship and political disenfranchisement. The author masterfully dissects the movement's origins, tracing its genesis to the convergence of anti-capitalist economics and revolutionary philosophies. He scrutinizes the ideas of pioneering thinkers like Thomas Spence and William Thompson, who laid the intellectual foundation for the Chartists' demands for universal suffrage, a secret ballot, and other democratic reforms. The book delves into the movement's tumultuous trajectory, portraying the clashes between Chartist leaders and the authorities. It highlights pivotal figures like Feargus O'Connor and Ernest Jones, exploring their strategies and the impact of government suppression. The author also analyzes the Chartists' complex relationship with other strands of political thought, including Free Trade and Complete Suffrage movements. The book's concluding chapters underscore the lasting legacies of Chartism. It examines the movement's influence on the later development of the Labour Party and the eventual attainment of universal suffrage in the United Kingdom. This meticulously researched and engaging book offers a comprehensive and nuanced account of the Chartist movement, shedding light on a transformative period in British history and its profound impact on the evolution of modern democracy.
