Excerpt from Elements of Natural Philosophy: Designed for Academies and High Schools
In the present volume I have attempted to exhibit the leading principles of Natural Philosophy in a methodical and scientific form, without any use of the mathematics beyond the first elements of Algebra, Geometry, and Plane Trigonometry. Every principle is enunciated clearly and concisely, and, as far as practicable, I have exhibited the evidence upon which every principle rests. Even when the full demonstration involves an acquaintance with the more difficult parts of the mathematics, I have endeavored to give an outline of the philosophical principles upon which the mathematical demonstration is founded. Those principles which are considered specially important have been printed in italics, so as readily to attract the attention of the pupil. While the leading obj eet has been to teach general principles, care has been taken to combine with them a variety of useful information, and particularly to give an account of many recent discoveries in every branch of the science.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book establishes a foundation for the study of natural philosophy, a discipline that investigates the fundamental principles governing the behavior of inanimate matter, laying the groundwork for more advanced scientific exploration. The author begins by introducing basic properties of matter, including extension, impenetrability, divisibility, inertia, weight, and elasticity, illustrating how these properties manifest in everyday phenomena. The book then systematically delves into the concepts of motion and force, defining velocity, acceleration, and momentum, and establishing the important laws of motion formulated by Newton. Through clear explanations and practical examples, the author provides a comprehensive understanding of how forces interact with matter, causing objects to move or change their motion. This book serves as an invaluable resource for anyone seeking a solid grasp of the fundamental principles of mechanics, offering a structured and engaging approach to the subject. Its insights are foundational to further study in physics and engineering, providing a gateway to deeper exploration of the physical world.
