Excerpt from Faust, Vol. 1: With an Introduction and Notes; Followed by an Appendix on Part II
IN the Introduction and Notes contained in this volume will be found the substance of some lectures on the Faust of Gothe, given at Newnham College, Cambridge. My aim in the Introduction has been to. Suggest what I believe to be the true meaning of the whole Faust Poem, and in the Notes to explain allusions, phrases, or constructions, which I have found to present difficulties to my own pupils. My book can lay no claim to being a complete study of Faust; but my hope is that it may lead readers on towards a complete study - including at the same time its spiritual meaning and external history.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book provides an in-depth analysis by an unnamed author of Goethe's classic play, Faust. Originally a legend of the 16th century, the author traces the evolution of the Faust story from its origin through to Goethe's seminal contribution to the genre. Faust is emblematic of humanity's universal and often tragic struggle between our innate drive for knowledge and our limitations as finite beings, leading the author to explore themes of morality, human nature, and the power of redemption. It is a thoughtful and insightful analysis of a literary classic that has captured the human imagination for centuries.
