Dans la partie ordinaire, on dispose vingt pions noirs sur les quatre premières lignes du côté des noirs; vingt pions blancs sont disposés sur les quatre dernières du côté des blancs. Le joueur désigné par le sort fait manoeuvrer l'un de ses pions conformé ment àla marche indiquée plus loin; le second joueur joue à son tour, et ainsi de suite. Lorsque l'un des adversaires a laissé prendre tous ses pions, d'après les règles prescrites, il perd la partie. Il la perd encore lorsqu'il ne peut plus jouer, bien qu'il lui reste un ou plusieurs pions bloqués par ceux de l'adversaire. Dans certains cas, la partie ne peut se terminer par la prise de tous les pions d'une même couleur la partie est alors considérée comme nulle.
