As to the porch fireplaces, no doubt they were put to many uses, and many rather fanciful conjectures have been made. One obvious suggestion is that they were used to bake the sacred wafer by means of a utensil which has been described to me. It consisted of two metal plates mounted on stems three or four feet long, working on a pivot on the principle of a pair of scissors. The paste for the wafer was spread in a thin layer on one of the plates and covered by the other, then by means of the long handles the baking could easily be managed, the twin plates being placed in or on the fire.
