This book examines remarkable feats of memory from ancient times to present day, classifying them into isolated memories, memories of names, memories of languages, memories for calculation, and memories for prose and poetry. The author argues that one of the most significant qualities of memory is universality, which enables a person to retain all kinds of facts with equal facility. He positions memory as a highly valuable attribute which should be cultivated and improved upon. The author supports this position by discussing several individuals who possessed extraordinary powers of memory, such as Seneca, who could repeat as many as two hundred isolated sentences or lines of poetry without mistake, and Jedediah Buxton, who was able to perform complex arithmetical operations, such as multiplying 456 by 378, entirely from memory. The book concludes by discussing Adrian, who was able to repeat word for word, from beginning to end, or from any part pointed out to him, any book that he had read but once with the intention of remembering it. The author suggests that Adrian's memory would have made him a great modern-day reporter.
