Fast 15 Jahre sind dahingegangen, seit der erste Band dieses Werkes zum Abschluss und zur Herausgabe gelangte; und es bedarf der Begründung, warum erst jetzt, so lange Zeit später, der zweite das Werk abschliessende Band folgt. Mit den allgemeinen Vorarbeiten zum zweiten Bande hatte ich alsbald nach Vollendung des ersten begonnen, hatte auch 1901 eine erste Lieferung herausgegeben, in der ich die Existenz der automorphen Functionen, die Theorie der automorphen Formen und diejenige der Poincaré'schen Reihen einer ausführlichen Behandlung unterzog. Aber in den darauf folgenden Jahren wurden öfter wiederholte Ansatze, das Werk durch den Abschluss zu krönen, immer wieder durch zeitraubende amtliche Verpflichtungen, in welche ich mich neu einzuarbeiten hatte, unterbrochen; und ich habe Jahre lang die Befürchtung gehegt, dass der grosse mit Klein's „vorlesungen über das Ikosaeder beginnende Publicationsplan noch in seiner letzten Etappe einer aussichtslosen Stockung zum Opfer fiele.
