This book examines the history of English language teaching in Germany and the development of the Direct Method in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, focusing on the innovations German teachers made and the challenges they faced. The author visited schools around Germany, observing and interviewing teachers and students to understand the Direct Method's principles and its success. The Direct Method aimed to teach practical conversational English to German students by immersing them in the language without translation or rote learning, a revolutionary concept at the time.
