In 1573 the plague was raging in the town of Southampton, and recourse was had to the ex pedient of painting a cross on the house doors of infected persons; such persons were obliged to carry white rods in their hands to knows the syke from the whole; and the town emplo'yed six men and women as keepers and bearers' of the sick people, at one shilling per week each.
