Excerpt from History of the German People, From the First Authentic Annals to the Present Time, Vol. 7: The Reformation and Counter Reformation
There is no doubt that in the radicalism of ref ormation of the so-called Baptists the very old ascetic ideal, on which the medieval View of the world was based, again became very active for the purpose of improving the favorable opportunity of church revolution, and at the same time preventing the reformatory reconciliation between Christianity and the world. It would be difficult to determine whether the different forms of this evangelical radicalism were in some measure due to the ever recurring consequences of religious unrest, or simply to the privilege of studying the Scriptures as pro claimed by Luther. Certain symptoms, such for instance as an increased inclination to recognize in every day occurrences the direct action of higher powers, or an enlarged susceptibility for ecstatic conditions, were sure to recur during religiously agitated periods.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the history of the radical Reformation, focusing on the rise and fall of the Baptist movement. Starting as a movement driven by Christian ideals, this book chronicles how the Baptists confronted the established order of the Catholic Church and the emerging Protestant denominations. The author traces the geographic spread of the Baptist movement, its key figures, and its theological underpinnings. The book explores the Baptists' rejection of infant baptism, their emphasis on personal spiritual experience, and their pursuit of a life free from worldly influence. Along with recounting the Baptist's persecution, this book examines the movement's chiliastic beliefs, their millenarian expectations, and their eventual transition into more moderate forms of Christianity. The book concludes by highlighting the lasting impact of the Baptist movement on the development of religious thought and the broader Protestant tradition.
