A system of somewhat closer condensation of many of the manuscripts having been adopted, more precise marginal references than in previous volumes have been given; but as in nearly every case the original manuscript has been transcribed by. The editor himself, it is hoped that no point of importance with regard to England has been omitted. This process of greater condensation has been rendered necessary by the fact, that all direct diplomatic relations between England and Spain having ceased, the references to English affairs are often contained inci dentally in documents mainly relating to other subjects. Care, however, has been taken, whilst eliminating as far as possible such matter as referred solely to foreign countries, to retain almost literally everything of im portance likely to interest students of English history.
