The W. Shore presents a sin ar appearance. As high as 43° of lat. The who e space between this sea and the Enxine is filled by the immense masses of the Caucasus; Kat from this region the Caspian receives rivers w ich have their sources at nearly 300 m. Distant from its coasts; they flow, however, over high plateaux, and through narrow ravines, apparently cnt b their own action, and which are sometimes scarce y wide enough to afford them passage. (col. Monteith, Geog. J ourn., iii. 89, ct pass.) Col. M onteith believes the narrow bed of the Terek to be the Film Caspim of the ancients; and it answers exactly, in both descrip tion and situation, to the pass which Pliny 311 11 (vi. 11-13) was erroneously so called; but t e true Caspian tea were an artificial Opening cut thro h the 'burz mountains on the S. Coast.
