James Lovelock is the originator of the Gaia theory. Over his career he has worked for the Ministry of Defence, NASA and Shell. He was awarded the Royal Geographic Society s Discovery Lifetime award in 2001, was made a Companion of Honour in 2003 and was awarded a lifetime achievement award in 2011 at the Observer ethical awards.
