The Human Genome Project is the largest and most widely known large-scale biomedical research project, but the advent of "discovery science" and systems biology is leading towards other large-scale studies. Initiated by the National Cancer Policy Board, this study sought to define the concept of large-scale science as related to cancer research, examine the current state of the field, and make recommendations for the process of conducting such studies in the United States. Although the study focused on cancer research, the authors believe that its findings can be applied to other fields. Annotation (c) Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
