The Committee was established at the request of several US government agencies to frame some of the great intellectual challenges inherent in the study of Earth and other planets, as a complement to the many studies looking at research priorities that focus on the next steps to take, rather than the far destinations to be sought. They explore the large areas of the origins of Earth and other planets, the Earth's interior, how and why the planet is habitable, and hazards and resources. Specific issues include how life began, why Earth has plate tectonics and continents, how life and Earth have shaped each other, and how fluid flow and transport affect the human environment. Within each chapter, subsections ask even more detailed questions. Some degree of familiarity with scientific thinking and terminology makes the reading easier, but the treatment is generally aimed at policy makers. No index is provided. Paperback. Condizione: New. Questions about the origin and nature of Earth and the life on it have long preoccupied human thought and the scientific endeavor. Deciphering the planet's history and processes could improve the ability to predict catastrophes like earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, to manage Earth's resources, and to anticipate changes in climate and geologic processes. At the request of the U.S. Department of Energy, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, National Science Foundation, and U.S. Geological Survey, the National Research Council assembled a committee to propose and explore grand questions in geological and planetary science. This book captures, in a series of questions, the essential scientific challenges that constitute the frontier of Earth science at the start of the 21st century. Codice articolo LU-9780309117173
