"Psychologist Brislin examines how to deal with cultural differences from a psychological perspective. Rather than approach the topic from a country-by-country analysis, he organizes his work by focusing on specific psychological topics such as individualism, silence, direct communication, criticism, decision-making, gender differences, status, power, social norms, workplace dynamics, and interpersonal relationships... Recommended. Professors, practitioners, and students interested in international business and workplace diversity."---Choice
"Curtis provides practical, straightforward strategies for talking your way out of sticky situations at work. Find yourself tongue-tied when trying to tell your boss what you really think? This book provides valuable advice for taking the stress out of workplace communications!"---Connie Glaser, Syndicated columnist and communications expert
"Noting that wellness programs are now a part of a company's overall healthcare strategy, Overman outlines how businesses can create a program that will help save on insurance premiums, increase employee productivity, and enhance the employer brand. Using examples from successful companies, she shows managers how to build wellness programs with discussion of how to get senior-management buy-in, build a team to design the program, and create programs that help with diet and mental health, offer rewards, and provide health assessments, medical clinics, or fitness centers. She also discusses using community resources and addressing diversity."---Sci Tech Book News
With the possible exception of sleep, people spend more time in the workplace than any other activity in their lives. Work offers a sense of identity, self-worth, pride, social status, security, opportunities for advancement, and even friendships. So what can people do when their workplace leaves them frustrated, bored, or unhappy?
The Undreaded Job: Learning to Thrive in a Less-than-Perfect Workplace was written to help people find satisfaction in the workplace, turning work into a major contributor to overall happiness. The book is organized around issues individuals face as they try to thrive in the face of inevitable workplace imperfections. These include imperfections in the leaders for whom they work and the collegues with whom they interact. The book also covers the influence of one's own thinking processes and those of others, power and political sophistication in the workplace, worker motivation, development and change, workplace diversity, social skills, and the communication challenges that arise as people pursue different or conflicting goals.
The author, an expert in both psychology and management, reviews research on these topics as it relates to workplace satisfaction and life happiness. Each chapter explains research findings in ways that translate them into key concepts applicable in any workplace, at any level.
