As the French Revolution was a social, religious, and political reaction against the ideas of the old regime, slow in taking form, but with deep-rooted causes, so the Romantic School, representing a corresponding move inent in literature, though finding its definite expression at a somewhat later date, was a reaction against the classic school represented by the writers who flourished at the court of Louis Quatorze. The formality and con ventionality which attended the Grand Monarque gave a distinct tone to the society of the seventeenth century, and the literature of the period, designed to please and interest this society could but present the same essential traits. So this classic school was a school of formalism, rich ln elegance of diction and purity of style, but lack ing in erpotive power and_ failing to touch the hidden springs of feeling.
