It is quite impossible to exaggerate the rarity of the auto graphs of the early painters; for in many instances their extant letters can be counted upon one's fingers. N 0 other collection of anything like equal importance is in existence. The finest of all collections of artists' autographs hitherto known was that of Herr meyer-cohn, and the splendid pieces which rendered it so renowned are incorporated in this collection.
The British Museum, which amongst all the European national collections is by far the richest in autographs, pos sesses no example of any description of no less than twenty one of the famous artists represented in this superb series; moreover, in several other instances the British Museum con tains merely signatures, whereas holograph letters will be found in this collection.
