IN the revision of this text, although rather extensive changes in method of treatment have been made in cer tain parts, the general subject matter and order Of arrange ment have been, in the main, retained. The chapter on Dynamics of Machinery, now. Called Dynamics of a Rigid Body, has been transferred to a later position in the book on account of its relatively greater difficulty.
An important change is to be found in the much larger use of graphical methods. The graphical and analytical methods have been developed simultaneously and many problems are given to be solved by both methods. The use of graphical methods has brought about the intro duction of considerable new material, particularly in the construction of stress diagrams for trusses, and in the application of the equilibrium polygon to centers of grav ity of plane areas, to weighted strings and linkages, and to bending moment diagrams.
