Varied and vast, and in great part unexplored, as is the wonderful continent, or rather peninsula, of africa, it is not a little surprising and consoling that those, to whom we are indebted for the most copious and correct accounts of it, are either Englishmen by birth, or were prompted to their exertions by British remuneration. Almost all that the Ancients knew of this extensive country, was confined to the Northern and Western coasts.
