Excerpt from Cinq-Mars, Ou Une Conjuration Sous Louis XIII
IN preparing this edition of cinq-mars for use as a text-book, I have aimed at preserving, as far as possible, each of the three excellences which it possesses for such a purpose, its historical value as a picture of Richelieu and his time, its interest as a romance, and the classical purity of its style. To bring the book within the compass of one volume, large omissions have been neces sary. The striking episode of Grandier's trial, though it has no direct connexion with the main story, seemed too valuable as an illustration of the spirit of the age to be omitted. The narrative which sup plies the place of the excised chapters is sufficiently full to keep up the interest of the plot. The notes are rather historical than grammatical; and, while I have tried to avoid the common fault of over-annotation, I hope that no real difficulty of language has.
