Excerpt from The Book of Job: Translated From the Hebrew, With a Study Upon the Age and Character of the Poem
The book of Job may be regarded as the ideal of a Semitic poem. The translation which I offer to the public belongs thus to the collection of works which I have undertaken upon the languages and the genius of the peoples to which we are ac customed to give the name of Semites. Many of the traits by which I have endeavoured, in another work,* to exhibit the character of these peoples may have seemed obscure or excited some as tonishment. I could not therefore respond better to the just requirements of persons who demand on this point the most ample explanations, than in showing to them how the Semitic genius has depicted itself in its most original creation and, if I may say so, in its most perfect mirror.
