Les éditions précédentes contenaient trois Notes les deux premières, rédigées l'une par E. Prouhet, l'autre par M. Puiseux, ont été conservées; la troisième, rendue inutile par les modifications apportées à la cinquantième Leçon, a été remplacée par l'exposé de la théorie gêné rale des mouvements relatifs. Une quatrième Note ren ferme les additions les plus importantes jîy donne une méthode très - simple pour obtenir les équations de La grange, et je montre par plusieurs exemples avec quelle facilité ces équations permettent de résoudre la plupart des problèmes de Dynamique; puis j'étais les équa tions canoniques et le théorème de Jacobi qui permet souvent d'en obtenir les intégrales générales. Cette nou velle édition contient ainsi toutes les matières de la Li cence, sauf quelques questions de Mécanique appliquée qui ne se seraient rattachées que de loin aux Leçons de Sturm. Enfin, comme on ne saurait bien posséder les théories de la Mécanique rationnelle sans en avoir fait des applications, nous avons donné les énoncés de près de trois cents problèmes empruntés au Recueil du P. Jullien et à celui que j'ai publié moi - même les lecteurs studieux y trouveront un nombre suffisant d'exercices sur les différentes parties du Cours.
