Excerpt from The Principles of Human Knowledge: A Treatise on the Nature of the Material Substance and Its Relation to the Absolute
One special merit, to which this edition of Berkeley's great work lays claim, and whereby it is hoped here to conciliate the attention of an enlightened public, is that it is the only edition with explanations that has ever been prepared by an adherent of Berkeley's by one who undertakes to make quite clear the truth of the discovery promulgated in that remarkable pro duction. All the other editions, both at home and abroad, are avowedly published by opponents of the doctrine, who acknowledge themselves unable to see its truth, or even, it would seem, the full purport of men's statements on the subject.
