Hardback. Over 150 full-colour photographsThis book is a celebration in photographs and words of the enduring beauty of the natural world. It has been compiled from the pages of the Audubon magazine which the famous naturalist, Roger Tory Peterson, has described as 'not only the most beautiful natural history magazine in the World but the most beautiful magazine of any sort in the English language. The editor, Les Line, has gathered about him a family of the most sensitive photographers now working. It is their work that transports the reader into the primordial world of fossil remains; the habitat of the ancient Galápagos tortoises; the terrible beauty of volcanic lava flows, and the dazzling flowering of life in regions of ice and snow.Following the mysterious paths of evolution, the photographer searches the interstices of coral reefs; records the minute changes on the margins of the seashore as the tides ebb and Aow.The marshlands, the blue-grass prairies, and the meadow are the subjects of photographic essays of outstanding merit. The pictures of the creatures of the forest and mountain, leaping like the bighorn ram from crag to crag, or deer grazing amongst bracken in the sunshine, or the lone wolf in a lakeland wil-derness, capture the essence of the wild ani-mal. The life of the rare osprey is recorded, and Eliot Porter talks about the art of bird photography with superb examples from the exotic ruby-crowned kinglet to the white-throated sparrow.Look and read and be refreshed. 1974, First edition.
