Sinossi

Kierkegaard's critique of 'the aesthetic' is one of the major aspects of his authorship, and this study aims both to give a full exposition of this critique and to set it in the context of the literary and philosophical situation of Kierkegaard's time.
Particular attention is paid to Kierkegaard's assumptions about dramatic, literary and religious writing, and to how these assumptions influenced his own work, though it is argued that he requires us to believe in the decisive significance of extra-textual realities.
