Leo XII. And his successors, it became increasingly apparent that they had fallen only to be absorbed into one central administration, too truly called, at Rome, the Supreme and Universal Inquisition. It is not without reason that the Pope is called Prefect, or Universal Inquisitor. He is really what he professes to be, so far, at least, as his juris diction and his influence extend. He is not chief Jesuit, indeed, or chief Dominican, or chief Oratorian, but he is, at the same time, and with equal reality, chief of the Bishops, and chief of the Inquisitors. This is confirmed by facts adduced in the last chapter, and the Author would fail in the discharge of a duty to his fellow-christians, and to their common Head, the Lord Jesus Christ, if he were not to ask and challenge a. Searching examination of the results to which those facts conduct him, - thdt the Inquisition now exists, and acts throughout Christendom, less repulsively, indeed, but not less efectively, than when it paraded its penitents, and openly burnt its victims.
