Since for most students of Analytic Geometry the subject is quite as essential as a preparation for the study of Calculus as it is valuable for its own methods and body of facts, the method and notation of the Calculus have been used in their application to tangents, normals, and maxima and minima in the plane, and to tangent planes and lines in space.
