Mit bangem Herzen betrete ich in jungen Jahren die Lehrkanzel des römischen Rechtes an der ersten Universität des Reiches, die Stätte, geweiht durch edler und großer Männer Wirken, deren Namen ich nicht zu nennen brauche, weil sie im Munde aller sind, der Zierden der Rechtswissenschaft, die ihren Ruhm ver breitet haben weit hinaus über die Hallen dieses stiller Wissenschaft geweihten Hauses, weit über die Grenzen des österreichischen Vaterlandes, ja weiter als die deutsche Zunge reicht Nie war es mir vergönnt, zu ihren Füßen sitzend ihrer Lehre zu lauschen, und um so schwerer empfinde ich darum die Verantwortlichkeit dieser Stunde die ihr Amt in meine Hände legt.
