Gaspar Torrella gehort mit zu den besten Beobachtern der Syphilis in der damaligen Zeit, der trotz oder vielleicht wegen seines geistlichen Standes, da er am Hofe Alexanders VI. Näheren Zutritt hatte, das Uebel sehr genau kennen gelernt. Der Pabst ernannte ihn zu seinem Hausprälaten und zum Bischof von Santa Justa auf der Insel Cerdena Julius II. Hob diesen Bischofsitz auf, gab aber Torrella dafur den von Oristan und liess ihm den Titel von Santa Justa. In solcher Eigenschaft unterzeichnete er auch 1512 auf dem 5ten lateranischen Concil, das Julius II. Ab hielt. In der Vorrede zu seinem Werk, de ulceribus et dolore in pudendagra 1) sagt Gaspar Torrella: mein Vater war Arzt, und hat sich durch seine grosse Erfahrung in dieser Kunst ein ewiges An denken gestiftet; jetzt sind wir drei Brüder, Söhne dieses Vaters, Doctoren in derselben Fakultät und ich der geringste unter ihnen. Das Buch schrieb er, nachdem er sich schon 10 Jahre von der Praxis zurückgezogen hatte. Dass ihm die Krankheit als ein kratzartiger Ausschlag erschien, lässt sich wohl glauben; wenn er ihr aber den Namen pudendagra beilegt, so kann man daraus schliessen, dass er die richtige Quelle nicht übersehn.
