Nous apprenons le grec et le latin dans les collèges, mais nullement pour devenir des hellénistes ou des latinistes, car alors notre système d'éducation serait déplorable et mériterait tous les ré proches qu'on lui fait. Une fois hors de page, les neuf dixièmes des jeunes gens désapprennent ces deux lan gues; et combien d'entre eux, devenus pères de famille, pourront suivre les études de leurs enfants jusqu'en qua trième? Tel n'est donc pas le but que poursuivent les maitres de la jeunesse française; l'étude prolongée du grec et du latin n'est, à leurs yeux, qu'un moyen d'ob tenir de tout autres résultats. Il s'agit de faire, non des Savants, mais des hommes du monde, des ingé nieurs, des avocats, des médecins, qui sachent penser et exprimer clairement leurs pensées.
