Excerpt from Studies in Fossil Botany, Vol. 2: Spermophyta

Since the previous edition appeared, the author's views as to the relationships of the Pteridosperms have changed. The theory that they were derived from Ferns no-longer appears tenable. The Seed Plants, of which the Pteridosperms seem to be the most primitive representatives known, are now regarded as an inde pendent phylum, running back as far as any of the recognised lines of the Higher Cryptogams.
