Excerpt from Skipper George Netman: A Story of Out-Port Methodism in Newfoundland
Many's the time, at first, I've seen a boot or a cap flung at him, as he knelt down by his bunk. But he bore it all patiently, never flinched for a moment in saying and doing what he thought right; checked us fifty times a day for swearing, though he got plenty of abuse for his pains and was as cheerful and ready to do a good turn as if we treated him well. I've seen him sitting on his hunk reading his Bible on asunday, Sir, with the men playing cards and skylarking all around him. But he gained on us, somehow, and we hadn't been many days out before we knocked off the most of our tormenting and became a little more civilised ourselves. There are many like him at the ice nowadays, Sir, but there weren't many at that time, at least not up our way. There was one thing that made us all respect him, I remember. He was a powerful man, and a match for any of us I expect; but all our jeers and fun-making at him never brought a spark of temper to his eye, or a cross word from his lips, though some tried again and again to get up a quarrel with him.
