Holling Clancy Holling (born Holling Allison Clancy; 1900 1973) was an American writer and illustrator, best known for the book Paddle-to-the-Sea, which was a Caldecott Honor Book in 1942. Paddle to the Sea won the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award in 1962. In 1966, Bill Mason directed the Oscar-nominated short film Paddle to the Sea, based on Holling's book, for the National Film Board of Canada. He was a runner-up for the Caldecott Medal in 1942 for Paddle-to-the-Sea. He received the Commonwealth Club of California Literature Award in 1948 for Seabird, which was also a runner-up for the Newbery Medal in 1949. He was a runner-up for the Newbery Medal again in 1952 for Minn of the Mississippi. With his wife, Lucille, he received the Southern California Council on Literature Award in 1961 for 'Pagoo'. 'Pagoo' is engrossing and intriguing experience! The story is about Pagoo or Pagurus the hermit crab. The writing and exquisite illustrations illustrate his life story beautifully. From his starting out as small as a pencil dot to his full grown size of a couple of inches in length the delicate drawings take us through his world in Tide Pool town! Full colour pictures also depict baby shrimp, baby squid, baby crabs, and plankton creatures swimming around Pagoo in the great sea! As Pagoo molted he is shown in different stages of development, looking like a young crawfish in the early stage and later more like a hermit crab in search of a home(sea shell). Pagoo's travels took him through a mussel land and after meeting up with barnacles and a starfish he found room and board on the back of a lady hermit crab whose barnacles provided a home for Pagoo! After being swallowed by a fish and chased by a seagull Pagoo found a shell and had a narrow escape from a huge octopus! Finally Pagoo mated with a female hermit crab and afterwards she had many eggs to start the lifecycle again! 'Pagoo' is a lovely, fasinating book! ; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 87 pages.
