This text treats rocky, sandy and muddy shores worldwide. It describes the major factors which determine the biological make-up of rocky shores, sandy beaches and mudflats. Patterns of distribution of intertidal organisms are described worldwide and the dynamic processes that underlie these patterns are discussed in detail, especially predation, competition and disturbance. This is carried out in the framework of the four main environmental gradients: shore height, wave exposure, particle size and salinity, thereby enabling all types of shore to be treated in a comparative way. The authors assess the ecological consequences of human activity on the shore, particularly the effects of exploitation for food, organic enrichment and oil pollution, and the consequences of sea-level rise due to global warming. Techniques for investigation of the shoreline are described in detail.

Since the turn of the century, ecologists have increasingly appreciated the range of opportunities provided by shore organisms to test and develop theories both in the field and in the laboratory. Although intertidal ecology is now widely taught in secondary and tertiary education courses, a contemporary, comprehensive account of both rocky and sediment shores ecology has not been available to students and lecturers. 'Intertidal Ecology' aims to fill this gap, providing an accessible introduction to the study of both rocky and sediment shores and relating these examples to general ecological principles. The clear style, attractive illustrations and fresh approach of the authors will appeal to students of ecology at all levels." Weight (before packaging): 585g. Codice articolo 1612

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The seashore has long been the subject of fascination and study - the Ancient Greek scholar Aristotle made observations and wrote about Mediterranean sea urchins. The considerable knowledge of what to eat and where it could be found has been passed down since prehistoric times by oral tradition in many societies - in Britain it is still unwise to eat shellfish in months without an 'r' in them. Over the last three hundred years or so we have seen the formalization of science and this of course has touched intertidal ecology. Linnaeus classified specimens collected from the seashore and many common species (Patella vulgata L. , Mytilus edulis L. , Littorina littorea (L. )) bear his imprint because he formally described, named and catalogued them. Early natural historians described zonation patterns in the first part of the 19th century (Audouin and Milne-Edwards, 1832), and the Victorians became avid admirers and collectors of shore animals and plants with the advent of the new fashion of seaside holidays (Gosse, 1856; Kingsley, 1856). As science became professionalized towards the end of the century, marine biologists took advantage of low tides to gain easy access to marine life for taxonomic work and classical studies of functional morphology. The first serious studies of the ecology of the shore were made at this time (e. g. 372 pp. Englisch. Codice articolo 9780412299605
