Henri Bergson was one of the foremost thinkers to come out of France in the late 19th century. He came to philosophy from a background in mathematics (winning an open prize for an original mathematical solution at the age of 17) and was not afraid to take on Einstein in public debate. His impact in the philosophy of science has been largely underestimated, although some modern scholars now believe that he was, in many ways, a forerunner of the quantum theory of physics.
