This is a dictionary of terms in phonetics and phonology written for students and teachers. It should be of interest to all those concerned with or working in speech therapy. The terminology of articulatory phonetics is covered in detail, and there is also treatment of important acoustic and auditory phonetics. Comprehensive coverage is afforded to phonology, including classical phonology, early and later versions of generative phonology and contemporary approaches. Given the recent re-emergence of prosodic ideas in phonology, prosodic terminology, both traditional and contemporary, is also well covered. Historical phonology, intonation and tonology and the phonology of English are all considered. The format is clear and easy to use, offering a variety of features to facilitate quick and comprehensive information retrieval. Features include: 2000 terms, many of them with multiple senses; summary of the major feature systems; pronunciations, notational devices and symbols; earliest sources of terms; suggestions for further reading.
