It introduces Roman historical writing, then traces the history of Rome over more than 1000 years, using extensive passages from ten Greek and Roman historians - from Livy's account of the city's foundation by Romulus to the great defeat at Adrianople by Ammianus Marcellinus. Selections include classic texts by such figures as Caesar, Suetonius, and Tacitus. The book contains Sallust's "Catiline", Suetonius' "Life of Caligula", and Augustus' "Autobiography" in their entirety.
