AN author or publisher having in his hand a manuscript, collection of printed copy, or a combination of both, wishes to learn what shape, and size of page will best suit his purpose. The first question is, How many words are there in the copy to be put in hand? Occasionally, calculations are made by letters instead of by words. Of course this is theoretically more accurate. A Johnsonian writer will not make as many words from a given number of letters as will another who uses short and simple words. But practically the words of a given composition furnish an approximately accurate measure. How shall their number be ascertained?
