Ockley (simon) a very learned Englifhman, was ofa gentleman's family at Great Ellingham in Norfolk, where his father lived, but was born at Exeter in 1678. After a proper commum' foundation laid in fchool learning, he was fent in 1693 to catcdw as' Qieen' s College in Cambridge, where hefoon diiiingurfhed him felf by great quicknefs of parts, and intenfe application to lite rature to the Oriental languages more particularly, uncommon ikill in which he afterwards became famous. He took at the ufual time the degrees in arts, and that of bache 3161 in divinity; but by marrying very young, was precluded from a fellowlhip in his college, which would otherwife have lain entirely '0pen to him. In 1705, he was, through the interef't of Simon Patrick bifhop of Ely, prefented by J'efus College to the Vicarage of Swavefey in the count y of Cam bridge and; in 171 chofen Arabic profeffor of the unit/eti fity. Thefe preferments he held to the day of his death, which happened a Swavefey, the oth of Auguf'r 1720 i111 maturely to himfelf, but fomewhat more fo to his family.
