Sinossi

The government's recent "Health of the Nation" document has major implications for the responsibilities and role of nurses with regard to health promotion. This open learning pack in the series "Professional Development in Quality Care" is designed to help nurses appreciate the importance of health promotion both professionally and personally. This text gives an overview of the complete policy both in terms of content and the relevance of targets set in relation to World Health Organisation (WHO) goals. It then looks at the nurse's role in health promotion and the development of approaches and strategies, and looks at conceptual models of nursing practice in the light of the changing focus of care from professional led to client (patient) led care. There are chapters on health promotion in: cancer; sexual health and AIDS; coronary heart disease and stroke; mental illness; and accidents. Conclusions are then drawn for the further direction of nursing practice.
