Synthesis and Applications of Isotopically-Labelled Compounds: Recent Advances and Emerging Topics delves into the transformative developments in isotopic labelling, a crucial field underpinning advancements in chemistry, biology, and medicine. The book emphasizes innovative methodologies for synthesizing compounds labelled with isotopes such as tritium, carbon-14, and various stable isotopes. It also discusses the tools and technologies refined over recent years to enhance analytical precision in their study. By combining theory with practical applications, it serves as an invaluable resource for researchers and professionals seeking deeper insights into isotopic synthesis and utilization.
Additionally, the book explores emerging topics, including novel applications in drug development, environmental tracing, and biochemical research. It integrates findings that push the boundaries of isotopic analysis, offering perspectives on future trends and challenges in the field.

David Hesk is Director of Radiochemistry in the Center for Drug Discovery at RTI International. After obtaining his Ph.D. studying hydrogen isotope exchange chemistry under the direction of Professor J.R. Jones, Dr. Hesk worked for 27 years in the Radiochemistry and Labeled Compound Synthesis groups at Schering-Plough and Merck where he was responsible for the synthesis, purification, and analysis of isotopically labelled compounds in support of pharmaceutical research. There he maintained his interest in hydrogen isotope exchange labelling (HIE) and published the first example of the application of Crabtree’s catalyst in HIE in 1995.
Volker Derdau is the Head of the Centre of Excellence for Isotope Chemistry and Senior Distinguished Scientist at Sanofi, based in Germany. With over 25 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry, he is an expert in the area of homogeneous catalysis, including radiochemistry and photocatalysis. He is author of over 70 articles and patents.
Synthesis and Applications of Isotopically-Labelled Compounds: Recent Advances and Emerging Topics reviews recent advances in the field of tritium, carbon-14, and stable isotope compound synthesis along with their analysis. The emerging field of the development of deuterated pharmaceuticals is also discussed, along with the application of isotopically labelled compounds in drug metabolism studies. There currently is no authoritative text for this area that presents a comprehensive guide to the field for the community, as well as newcomers, interested parties or collaborators who need to be able to communicate with the labeling groups. This book will fill this gap and provide a "one-stop shop" by having a comprehensive review of recent developments This book will cover details around the analytical chemistry in depth in Chapter 9 which will tie in the with synthesis reviews in the earlier chapters 1 through 4. Chapter 3 will also include a section on a new method of stable isotope analysis. In addition, Chapters 5, 7 and will cover the analytical chemistry aspects of these specific areas.
