The dictionary contains approximately 5000 entries in each of the four languages. High-energy physics - still widely known as elementary-particle physics - is devoted to elementary particles, their properties, structures and interactions. To study the particles, large accelerators are used. The most recent accelerators allow particle energies to be attained that are in the order of billions of electron volts. The particles of cosmic rays have still higher energies. The existence of elementary particles is shown by means of special radiation detectors, such as bubble chambers, counter telescopes, and streamer chambers. The theories of elementary particles are based on the concept of symmetry, especially the concept of unitary symmetry. At present, the most promising points of departure are the so-called gauge theories: the Weinberg-Salam theory as the unified theory of the electromagnetic interaction and the weak interaction; quantum chromodynamics as the theory of the strong interaction; and the grand unified theory, still in the process of development, which would provide a unified description of the weak and strong interactions. This dictionary provides a comprehensive collection of terms used in high-energy physics. The terms were compiled from specialized literature, including the most recent reports from research institutes and proceedings of conferences. As far as high-energy physics is concerned, the dictionary is a self-contained volume. However, it should also be seen in conjunction with two other dictionaries on related subjects, also compiled by Ralf Sube: Dictionary of Nuclear Engineering and Dictionary of Radiation Protection, Radiobiology and Nuclear Medicine. The three dictionaries together cover the whole field of nuclear physics and its applications. The dictionary uses the approved lexicographical system of the other dictionaries. To each entry is added the special field from which the term derives and further information that may help in understanding the correct meaning of the term. The alphanumeric arrangement allows the user to translate from any of the four languages into any of the other languages included.
